Today, we will open the Gospel of Luke, which depicts how Jesus, from His birth to His death and resurrection, unfolded God’s covenant and Kingdom on Earth. As He restored the lives of the poor, the sick, and the outcasts, He brought freedom and the eternal Kingdom of God to those who had faith in Him as the chosen One, the Son of God. In this Gospel, Jesus predicts that His mission will be one of suffering; and through His compassionate service to all, He served as a loving example for His disciples to follow. The author of the Gospel of Luke is widely viewed as Luke the Evangelist, one of the Seventy Apostles of Lord Jesus Christ.

The Cost of Following Jesus “As they were walking along the road, a man said to Him, ‘I will follow You wherever You go.’ Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.’ He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’ But he replied, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.’ Still another said, ‘I will follow You, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.’ Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the Kingdom of God.’”

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two “I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.” “‘Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects Him Who sent me.’ The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.’ He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in Heaven.’”
