In 2010, after receiving an email asking him to fly a group of puppies from South Carolina to Delaware, pilot Michael Young began his noble mission of transporting puppies by plane to escape locations where they would be euthanized. Since then, he has founded the non-profit Alabama Puppy Rescue Flights, which works in conjunction with the animal-people non-profit Alabama Rescue Relay to transfer puppies from all across rural Alabama to central Florida, where they are given the best chance to be adopted by benevolent caregivers. Michael connects with other pilots who fly to various parts of Alabama to pick up the would-be euthanized puppies. He meets them at a central location in Alabama and then brings the dog-people to Florida in his plane. His compassionate flights were made famous when a TikTok video posted by one of his flight crew went viral with over 13.7 million views and 3 million likes.
“The reason we do this (air transportation) is because of the safe and comfortable transport of these puppies, as opposed to the stress of sitting in a crate for a 12-hour drive. Now, the bigger dogs they (Alabama Rescue Relay) do ground transport, because they take them at night and they’ll sleep the whole way. But little puppies, they don’t have that kind of means to hold in when they have to empty themselves. That’s why these flights are so beneficial because this is a destress operation, not a stressful operation. When you see the pictures of the puppies on the plane, and they’re sleeping and they are just being held by the ground crew girls, it’s like everybody’s happy.”

This money will be used by shelters and rescues in Alabama and rescues here in Florida for medical bills, food, and other needs that these puppies need in order to be healthy. Researchers find genetic variations in people that can lead to severe COVID-19.
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, together with others from around the globe, have determined certain genetic makeups can predispose people to suffer from severe COVID. Whole genomic sequencing was performed on almost 7,500 critically ill patients, which was compared to over 48,000 members of a control group. In total, 16 new genetic variants were discovered that have added to the seven already known variations that have been correlated to developing severe acute COVID-19. The new findings will enable those at higher genetic risk to potentially be treated at an earlier stage of a COVID infection with particular medications. Giant floating solar panels beautify surroundings while providing sustainable energy in Korea.
Korea Water Resources Corporation, a government agency, and leading photovoltaic manufacturer Q CELLS have constructed 92,000 photovoltaic panels in the shape of plum blossom flowers on the surface of Hapcheon Dam. The floating generators’ surrounding water has a natural cooling effect on the solar arrays, while the panels also block sunlight and help to reduce algae bloom in the water. The 17 giant flowers can generate 41.5 megawatts, which is sufficient to power 20,000 houses. In addition, the green installation also reduces 26,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, thus assisting Korea in achieving its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Scientists make major advancement in battery technology.
Researchers from the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University, Australia, have made a breakthrough in lithium battery technology that could allow for faster charging, more stability, less expensive storage and longer battery life. The scientists redesigned the heart of a lithium-sulfur battery by creating a new interlayer that allows lithium-ion transfer to be exceptionally fast. This interlayer also stops polysulfides, a chemical that forms in lithium-sulfur batteries that shorten their life. As the world increasingly transitions to green energy, lithium batteries have become essential storage devices, and are used for a range of products from laptops to electric vehicles as well as in marine and aviation technologies. Polish philanthropist sponsors hotel accommodations for families escaping Ukraine.
An anonymous Polish entrepreneur and his team have paid for over 120 places covering a two month duration in two beautiful hotels in Poland to accommodate Ukrainian refugees as honored guests. Both the Hotel Spichlerz and Villa Prezydent in the picturesque town of Kazimierz Dolny, have agreed to forgo profits while local residents help out by providing language assistance, medical advice, food items and essentials to the guests, as well as hosting activities for the children such as an animation workshop. Hotel Spichlerz expressed its appreciation on social media for the continuing support from the community so it can keep serving its special patrons. Regional parliament in Belgium approves 10-year jail sentences for animal-people abusers.
The Flemish parliament that serves the Flanders region of Belgium recently approved stricter punishments for animal-people abusers, which includes up to 10 years in prison. Those harming people from the animal kingdom can initially receive up to five years in prison and €800,000 in fines for their first offense of serious neglect or mistreatment. Repeat offenders can be fined up to €1.6 million and receive an additional 5 years in prison. The new law also allows the immediate detainment of perpetrators, and proceeds from the fines will be used to support the Animal Welfare Fund, which helps to care for animal-people who have been taken from violators.
